Zoo City Summer Classic: 45+ Teams, 3 Weeks to Go
Inside: a crossing & finishing session for coaches, Landon Donovan on fixing youth soccer, Cristiano Ronaldo’s work ethic, and spotlights on Celtic SC and Mountaineer United SC.

Good morning,
My goal with every email is simple: to share my passion for youth soccer and the community that makes it thrive.
I hope you enjoy it, and I’d love to hear your feedback.
Coach’s Corner: FOUR Fast, Competitive High Tempo Crossing & Finishing Exercises to Score From Wide Areas
Coaches, this week’s idea comes from Modern Soccer Coach and focuses on crossing and finishing from wide areas. It’s high-energy, competitive, and gives players plenty of chances to score.
What makes it valuable is the realism. Instead of running isolated crossing patterns, these exercises teach players how to deliver better balls, time runs into the box, and finish under pressure like they would in a real match.
Emphasize quality service from wide areas, sharp movement from central runners, and composed finishing in front of goal. The goal is not just more crosses—it’s better decisions and better end product in the final third.
Parents’ Corner: Development Over Early Winning
A strong LMU Magazine piece points out a challenge many families already feel: too much of American youth soccer is built around high costs and early winning, instead of long-term player development. Landon Donovan recently echoed that idea, saying young kids need to be developing and having fun — not feeling pressure to win at 8 years old.
At UnitedGoals USA, we believe better youth soccer starts with more accessible events, less unnecessary cost, and environments where kids can compete, improve, and enjoy the game. We want more families able to say yes, and more players given the chance to grow the right way.
Players’ Corner — Cristiano Ronaldo: Discipline and Work Ethic
If you or your players need motivation, watch this. Cristiano Ronaldo’s success was not just talent—it was built on discipline, consistency, and an everyday standard that very few people are willing to hold themselves to.
In this video, former teammates share story after story about Ronaldo’s extra work, relentless habits, and refusal to cut corners. That mindset is the driving force behind his all-time greatness.
For younger players, the lesson is simple: habits separate you. Showing up early, staying late, training hard, recovering well, and doing the little things when no one is watching all add up over time.

Girls Team of the Week: Mountaineer United SC 2015 Girls
Mountaineer United SC (WV) powered through the field at the 2026 4v4 Pittsburgh Preseason Cup. They stormed to the top seed with wins of 10–0, 5–1, and 9–1, then finished the job with a 5–3 win over West Mifflin’s Lady Titans in the final. We can’t wait to see what this group does next! |
Boys Team of the Week: Celtic SC - 2016 Boys
If UnitedGoals USA had a hall of fame, Celtic SC’s 2016 Boys would be first-ballot inductees. This group has now won the 2025 Steel City 7v7 Showdown, 2025 Veterans Day Freedom Cup, 2026 4v4 Clover Cup, and most recently the 2026 4v4 Pittsburgh Preseason Cup. At the Preseason Cup, they dominated a deep U10 division, going 5–0 and outscoring opponents 34–7. Well done! |

Community Spotlight: SWRHS Interact Club
The Southwestern Randolph High School Interact Club is a student-led service organization sponsored by Randolph Rotary, built around the motto “Service Before Self”. Through volunteer work and community projects, these students are learning what it means to lead with character, serve others, and make a real difference close to home.
We’re grateful to have the Interact Club volunteering on-site at the Zoo City Summer Classic on May 30–31. Their students will help direct teams and families, keep referees hydrated, and support a smooth, safe, and organized tournament experience for everyone involved.
