What Coaches See That the Stat Sheet Doesn't

Preview: what U.S. Soccer scouts actually look for, making the most of every minute, advice from a USMNT pro & our Teams of the Week. (4-min read)

Good morning,

Goals, assists and wins are easy to notice.

But some of the most important parts of player development don't always show up on a stat sheet.

This week, we're looking at what coaches, parents and players can learn from the things that happen between the highlights.

⚽ Coach's Corner: What Does U.S. Soccer Actually Look For?

When evaluating young players, U.S. Soccer isn't simply looking for the fastest player, the leading scorer, or the kid with the fanciest footwork.

Its Talent Identification department evaluates six interconnected qualities:

  1. Physical Execution

  2. Game understanding and decision-making

  3. Technical execution

  4. Responsibility and initiative

  5. Growth mindset and winning mentality

  6. Learning ability.

That last half of the list is particularly interesting.

Can a player recognize what's happening? Take responsibility? Respond to coaching? Learn? Compete?

Development shouldn't only focus on creating better soccer players technically. Training can also create opportunities for players to make decisions, take initiative, respond to failure, and solve problems without immediately looking to the sideline for an answer.

The player who affects the game isn't always the player who fills the stat sheet.

Parent's Corner: Not Starting Doesn't Mean Not Developing

Every player wants to start. Every parent wants to see their kid on the field.

But youth soccer development doesn't always move in a straight line.

There will be weekends when a player gets fewer minutes than expected, plays a different role, or watches someone else start ahead of them. How they respond matters.

Do they disengage, or stay involved? Do they support their teammates? Are they ready when their opportunity comes? Do they use the experience as motivation at the next training session?

Wanting more playing time is natural. But learning to earn opportunities, handle disappointment, and stay ready are valuable too.

A spot on the bench today doesn't determine where a player will be tomorrow.

🇺🇸 Player's Corner: Getting There Isn't the Finish Line

Last month, Alex Freeman was surrounded by young players earning their first senior National Team call-ups. His advice to them was simple:

“You come here, then you need to perform. It's not like you come here and your job's finished.”

Freeman's point applies far beyond the National Team.

Making the top team isn't the finish line. Neither is becoming a starter, winning a tournament, making varsity, or earning your first college opportunity.

Every new level creates a new standard.

Enjoy the accomplishment. Be proud of it. Then get back to work and prove you belong there

🏆 Teams of the Week

Girls Team of the Week: PGAYSA Appalachian Fury

Pine Grove’s Appalachian Fury put together a dominant performance at the CenPenn Summer Cup, outscoring their opponents 23–0 on their way to the championship.

Going an entire tournament without conceding a goal is no small accomplishment, and this is a group we'll be keeping an eye on.

Congratulations, ladies!

Boys Team of the Week: Golden Boot

Golden Boot navigated a competitive eight-team bracket at the 2026 4v4 Loudoun Legends Shootout, finishing the day a perfect 5–0.

Four of their five victories came by three goals or fewer, as they consistently found ways to come out on top in a tightly contested division.

An impressive run against strong competition. Congratulations, boys!
