The 3 Best At-Home Drills for Players

(3-min read)

Good morning,

My goal with every email is simple: to share my passion for youth soccer and the community that makes it thrive.

I hope you enjoy it, and I’d love to hear your feedback.

Coach’s Corner: 3v2 Breakout Transition Game

A great drill for training quick combination play out of pressure and fast attacks to goal.

Setup:

  • Mark a small “build-out” zone (6-8 yard square) and a larger attacking zone ahead of it.

  • 3 attackers vs 1 defender start in the small zone.

  • A second defender waits in the larger zone.

  • One big goal for attackers to score on; 1 small Pugg goal in the small zone for defenders.

How It Works:

  1. Play starts with the 3 attackers in the small zone vs 1 defender.

  2. All three attackers must touch the ball (max 2 touches each) before they can break out.

  3. Once all three have touched it, they can dribble/pass into the larger zone, where a second defender joins to make it 3v2 to goal.

  4. If defenders win the ball at any point, they counter and try to score on the small Pugg goal in the build-out zone.

  5. After each rep, rotate in new attackers and defenders.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage quick, sharp combinations to escape pressure.

  • First touch should set up the next pass or drive forward.

  • Praise attackers who break out with pace and purpose, and defenders who win it and transition quickly.

Parent’s Corner: The 3 Best At-Home Drills for Players

If your player wants to improve outside of practice, start simple. Three of the highest-return at-home drills are:

  • Wall passes — first touch and passing accuracy

  • Juggling — coordination and ball mastery

  • Inside/outside touches — tight control in small spaces

All can be done in a driveway, basement, garage, or backyard. No cones needed. Just 30 minutes daily goes a very long way.

Joining Our Community

At UnitedGoals USA, community isn’t a buzzword — it’s the foundation of everything we do. Every tournament we host is tied to a cause that matters to the families, players, and programs we serve, whether that’s supporting a local youth soccer organization or partnering with a nonprofit making an impact.

It’s an honor to give back through our events, and we’re grateful for the support you’ve shown us in return. Thank you for helping us live out our mission of Building American Soccer Together.

Team Spotlight: FC Montour (2011 Girls)

FC Montour’s U15 Girls capped off an impressive fall by winning the NorCenPenn U15/16 Girls division and a strong bracket at the Veterans Day Freedom Cup. Between league play and the tournament, they allowed just 5 goals across 11 games. Congratulations to Coach Derrick Scott and his squad!

Team Spotlight: Celtic SC (2016 Boys)

Celtic SC, based in State College, continues its tradition of excellence. The 2016 boys had a standout year with UnitedGoals — capturing first place at the Steel City Showdown in April, second in the top division at the Colonial Classic in August, and most recently, winning gold at the Veterans Day Freedom Cup. Congratulations, guys!

Community Spotlight: Daughters of the American Revolution

Daughters of the American Revolution, Lycoming County chapter joined the Veterans Day Freedom Cup in Hughesville, PA

We were honored to welcome the Lycoming County chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution at this year’s Veterans Day Freedom Cup. DAR is a volunteer service organization dedicated to preserving American history, supporting veterans, and promoting civic education. Their presence added meaning to a weekend built around honoring service and community. We’re grateful for their support and for the work they do throughout Pennsylvania.
