Coach’s Corner: Fast-Paced 1v1 Drill

This week’s featured drill focuses on 1v1 attacking & defending, one of the most essential skills every young soccer player can develop. In this particular video, two players go head-to-head in small space with one attacker trying to beat the defender with the ball, and the other working to stop them and win back possession.

Coaches, this is important because it is giving your players repeated opportunities to practice these sort of game like situations in a realistic, competitive setting. It will help boost their confidence with the ball, decision-making, and defensive awareness.

Parents’ Corner: Preparing for Tournament Weekends

Tournament weekends can be exciting but so exhausting, so a little bit of planning ahead goes a long way. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, young athletes perform best when they are well-rested, properly hydrated, and fueled with balanced meals.

Make sure your players packs essentials like water, healthy snacks, sunscreen, extra socks, and any needed medical items. Arriving organized and calm helps reduce stress, keeps kids focused, and allows them to enjoy the experience both on and off the field!

Pep Guardiola —Manchester City Manager— has often talked about how the best players aren’t just fast, they’re smart. He believes that great players make quick, good decisions and understand what’s happening around them on the field.

Players, what this means for you:

• Instead of just trying to outrun opponents, focus on reading the game

• Scan the field before the ball reaches your feet

• Think one pass ahead — understand who’s open and where there is open space
