Helping Young Players Become More Complete
Preview: Inside: developing players who can solve problems, why positions shouldn't define them, advice from Harry Kane & our Teams of the Week. (4-min read)

Good morning,
The best development isn't always about adding more drills, more instruction, or more training.
Sometimes it's about giving players more ways to solve the problems the game puts in front of them.
This week, we're looking at that from three different angles.
⚽ Coach's Corner: Can Your Players Beat Someone?
Passing patterns matter. Possession matters. Team shape matters.
But sometimes soccer comes down to something much simpler: can a player outplay the opponent directly in front of them?
In a recent FIFA Training Centre feature, coach Michael Beale argues that “outplaying” means more than simply dribbling past someone. It can mean protecting the ball, creating space, breaking pressure, or finding an advantage before the defender can react. FIFA Training Centre
His session progresses from 1v1+2 → 2v2+2 → 3v3+2, gradually adding more teammates, opponents and decisions while keeping the central problem the same: find a way to outplay the opposition.
That's the part worth stealing.
Instead of teaching one predetermined solution, create situations where players have to read the defender and choose one: turn, protect it, combine, dribble, create space or play away from pressure.
Technique gives players tools. The game asks them to choose the right one.
Parent's Corner: A Position Isn't an Identity
“My kid is a defender.”
“My kid is a striker.”
At younger ages, it may be better to add one word:
Today.
Playing different positions exposes young players to different problems. A defender learns to see the field in front of them. A midfielder deals with pressure from every direction. A forward learns movement, timing and how to create chances.
And sometimes the position a player is best suited for at 10 isn't where they'll eventually play.
The point isn't that positions don't matter. They do. It's that learning the game from different places can create a more complete soccer player.
So if your player gets moved somewhere unfamiliar this weekend, it doesn't necessarily mean something went wrong.
It might be another opportunity to learn the game.
⚽ Player's Corner: Advice From Harry Kane
Harry Kane knows firsthand that development doesn't always happen on a straight line.
Kane was released by Arsenal at nine years old. He was one of the smaller players in his team and says a growth spurt around 14 completely changed him physically. His message to young players today is not to worry too much about predicting where soccer will eventually take them. England Football
His advice?
“Just enjoy playing football, try to play in different positions, learn all different aspects of the game and just work hard.” (England Football)
That's worth remembering.
You don't need to have your position, pathway or future figured out at 10, 12 or 14 years old.
🏆 Teams of the Week
Girls Team of the Week: Salty Beaches
![]() | Salty Beaches ran away with a talented U15/16 Girls division at the North Carolina 7v7 Cup. After outscoring their group-play opponents 10–1, they defeated Triad Union FC 8–0 in the semifinal before taking down a very talented Mavericks FC team 4–1 in the championship. An outstanding performance from start to finish. Well done, ladies! |
Boys Team of the Week: Soccer Squad
![]() | Soccer Squad battled through an incredibly competitive U15/16 Boys division at the 7v7 July Jamboree. After going 3–1 in group play, they earned another shot at the only team to beat them. This time, Soccer Squad flipped the result, winning the championship in a dramatic 3–2 penalty shootout. A great example of responding to adversity when it mattered most. Congratulations, boys! |
🇺🇸 More Than Just a Tournament
We're getting closer to the Veterans Day Freedom Cup on November 7–8 in Hughesville, Pennsylvania.
This event has always been about more than what happens on the field. Proceeds from the tournament support Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors and East Lycoming Soccer Association, helping us use the game to give back to the community hosting us.
Freedom Cup Apparel Is Now Available 🇺🇸
This year's official event apparel is available for pre-order, with 100% of apparel proceeds benefiting Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors.
If you're attending the tournament — or simply want to support Pennsylvania veterans — you can order ahead of the event.

⚽ One More Weekend in Western PA
One week later, we'll close out our 2026 tournament calendar with the Steel City Fall Finale, November 14–15 in Cranberry Township.
Boys and girls teams will compete at Graham Park and North Boundary Park, with the event benefiting Seneca Valley Soccer Association.
