Helping Players Get Better — On and Off the Field

Inside: smarter team communication, the importance of sleep, a weak-foot challenge, our Teams of the Week & what’s ahead for UnitedGoals USA. (4-min read)

Good morning,

Last week we covered one of the biggest changes to the American youth soccer landscape in years. This week, we're getting back to something simpler: helping players enjoy the game and continue getting better.

I hope you find something useful, and as always, I'd love to hear your feedback.

🗣️ Coach's Corner: Build a Shared Language

Good communication isn't about having the loudest team. It's about players developing a shared understanding of what they see and what happens next.

Can your group recognize the same pressing triggers, transition moments, opportunities to switch, or need to protect space?

Establish a few clear tactical principles in training, then gradually reduce your own communication. Let players identify the cues, organize each other, and solve problems themselves.

The goal isn't simply getting players to talk more. It's getting 11 players to see the game more similarly.

Parent's Corner: Don't Overlook Sleep

School is back, fall soccer is underway, and schedules are getting busy again. One of the simplest things parents can protect during a packed season is also one of the easiest to overlook: sleep.

Sleep plays an important role in physical recovery, learning, focus, - everything! And with practices, homework, games, and early mornings all competing for time, establishing a consistent bedtime and wake-up routine can make a difference.

For soccer families, the takeaway is simple: recovery isn't only what happens after the game. A good night's sleep is part of preparing for the next one.

🏠 Player's Corner: The Weak-Foot Challenge

For your next three training sessions, spend 10 minutes using only your weaker foot.

Pass against a wall. Dribble. Receive the ball. Work on your first touch. Finish if you have access to a goal.

Don't worry about making everything perfect. The goal is to become more comfortable doing things that currently feel uncomfortable.

Then give yourself one challenge in your next game:

Can you intentionally use your weaker foot at least five times?

Keep track and see how much more confident you feel by the end of the week.

Teams of the Week

Girls Team of the Week: SVSA Wave

SVSA Wave left no doubt in a talented U12 Girls bracket at the 7v7 Colonial Classic last month. Wave went a perfect 3-0 in group play, outscoring opponents 22-2 before earning a 3-1 semifinal victory and a 4-1 win in the championship.

An impressive weekend from start to finish. Congratulations, ladies!

Boys Team of the Week: Misfits

The Misfits battled their way through a tightly contested U15 Boys bracket at the 7v7 Colonial Classic last month.

After going 2-1 in group play, including a loss to Fayette United, the Misfits earned another shot at them in the championship — and made it count with a 3-0 victory to take home the title.

Way to battle back, Misfits!
